Point of View - NotesWhat is the difference between First, Second and Third Person point of view?
First Person: the narrator is a part of the story, the action is happening to him or her - Uses the word "I", "me", "we" (since he/she is a part of the story) Second Person: told by a narrator that is talking directly to "YOU" - Uses the word "you" - used to give directions or instructions Third Person: The narrator is NOT in the story and instead is an outside observer -Uses words like "he", "she", "they" - NEVER "you" or "I"

1. I didn't know why he was looking at me, but he just continued to stare at me. 2. Cesar and Victor kept throwing little wads of paper at me. I was so annoyed. Why did they keep pestering me? Second Person: notice the pronouns used. 1. The first thing you need to do when you get there is visit Glacier Point. 2. You have been training for months. You're ready. But, all of a sudden, the impossible happens... a sprained ankle. Third Person: notice the pronouns. 1. Sarah did not like that she couldn't sing in front of others, but she couldn't muster up the courage. 2. The others were there, watching him as he walked down the path. They were waiting... waiting for the perfect moment. EXAMPLE SENTENCES 1. Omniscient: Sarai and Dan were both upset with each other. Sarai was thinking she would break up with him, while Dan was thinking of what he could do to make things right. 2. Limited: Sarai was upset with Dan. She was ready to break up with him. 3. Objective: The black cat walked in front of the car. 4. Subjective: The black cat walked in front of the car, a truly unlucky sight indeed. |
